Come on SDH - not going to defend the Richmond show? If not, I'll throw out this one to rebut JOTS:

hey BD. I can find at least one good show from every year including 95. I just think as a whole that whole year is over rated and I think it's due to how many quality SBD's were out. To me the band sounds clunky and Jerry's voice is horrible.

It's funny, I'm listening to the Fox show right now and while I'm enjoying it, I know the Brent keys would drive you nuts. And I can easily pick entire months out of other years I'd rather listen to than most anything in '85 (although I'm enjoying this Birdsong at the moment).

I'm just gonna pretend I didn't see that post from Rings&bells.....otherwise I might just start foaming at the mouth with indignation.

(seriously, though--much as I truly believe 10/29/77 is the greatest show of all time and you just called it overrated--I mean, seriously? were you listening to the CM upgrade at least?--But I fully acknowledge that in the end it's all subjective. The ear likes what the ear likes.)

Probably why my pick for most seriously overrated show is 2/26/77

Everyone raves about it b/c it has the 1st Terrapin, first Estimated, etc....but if you really listen, the Terrapin's pretty tepid, Jerry doesn't even get all the words right, the Estimated is so truncated in length and exploration you might as well listen to the album version, and there's dozens of other shows from later in the year (when the band REALLY started to hit its stride w.the Terrapin material, that are far far better (anything from May after or even March Winterland, for example).

so that one gets my vote.....but for the love of all that's Jerry, R&B...PLEASE give 10/29/77 another listen. I don't care if it's not in your top 10 or anything--but most overrated???? Blasphemy.

p.s. You correctly noted the incredible EYES jam....but if that's to your liking, how can you not say the same about the jams in the BERTHA, JACK STRAW, ESTIMATED, STEPHEN & SUGAR MAG???? Just to name a few from that show????

OK, I need to take some deep breaths and remember "that's what makes horse races" or some other non confrontational cliche.

Hmm...I guess that is what makes horses races exciting. My favorite concert is 2/26/77. that is the only unique sounding Estimated until you get into the late 80's/early 90's where Bob decides to turn that song completely inside-and-out. There is a crisp high-hat (I think??) coming from Billy/Mickey, one of those two - and there is a killer Playin>Wheel>Playin. Plus the second set they play everything under the sun including an oddly placed Promised Land. The sound is so good!

Horses run!

gpia...that playin->wheel->playin is goosebump material for me, especially the way garcia so confidently starts the wheel, and then the way they get back into playin...chills

So its funny because i think everyone focuses on that first Terp and Estimated but the gem of that show is the Eyes>Dancing. Phil does one of the coolest little bass solos in the transition. The Sugaree is also excellent and the HSF is no slouch. Kind of reminds me of your favorite show, everyone talks about the Eyes but there are so many other parts of that show that make it great. Go back and listen to other parts of the Swing sometime, it is really impressive.

Go with the betty board:
